Note 2

An Air Rhodesia plane was shot down in February 1979 by Russian missiles fired from Kariba in Rhodesia. Among the 59 people killed was Andrew, aged 14, only son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Hardinge, a pupil at King William College. His uncle was Douglas Councillor Paul Hardinge, who emigrated to Australia recently. His grandfather, Arthur Hardinge, lives at Riverside, St. John’s and his grandmother in Albany Road, Douglas.

Note 3

Mrs. Pam Hardinge visited the Isle of Man in 1998 and asked me to send her the Campbell family Bible and her grandfather’s prayerbook and hymnbook. She advised me her grandfather was a cabinet maker, not a boilermaker as I had described him. Paul Hardinge’s younger brother was sometime Hunterian Professor at Glasgow.

Note 4

I note as a curiosity that two children on this page were named after professional footballers, Eric Cantona and Carlton Palmer.
