The following information comes directly from the searchable "RecordSearch" database at the National Archives of Australia website, which you can access AustArchives.gif (29.8Kbytes)
by clicking on their logo. A name or keyword can be entered to produce a list of all files held. Depending on an item's status, it can be either viewed in the reading room, or a copy provided at cost. Some items have also possibly limited or no access.

RecordSearch

RecordSearch is the National Archives collection database. It contains descriptions of 80 000 collections (called series) and over 3 770 000 record items as well as details of about 9000 creators and depositors. Digital copies of records can be requested online. This database contains details of Commonwealth records held by the National Archives of Australia nationally and by the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The National Archives’ collection contains over 400 shelf kilometres of records. RecordSearch allows you to search for information about the 80 000 separate collections, 9000 creators and depositors (agencies, persons and organisations), and over 2 500 000 (about 10%) of the individual items in the collection. You can use RecordSearch to search for and order records for delivery to a reading room, and to view digital copies of some records online. To find items that are not listed, you need to visit a reading room in person and check hardcopy item lists.

The Archives website is at http://www.naa.gov.au, their e-mail address is archives@naa.gov.au and their postal address is PO Box 7425, Canberra Mail Centre, ACT, Australia, 2600. The telephone number is +41-2-6212-3600, and the fax number: +41-2-6212-3699.
