Back to Roll of Honour

The War Memorial of Able Seaman John Brew of S.S. Somme is located at the Tower Hill Memorial in London.

John, born in New Zealand in 1907, who was the son of Denis and Margaret Brew, of Eltham, Taranaki, New Zealand, died on 16 February 1942, aged 35. He has no known grave, but his name appears on column 99 of the memorial. He was also the brother of Denis Brew, who died from wounds received in battle at Ypres on 12 December 1917, and is buried at Menin Road South Military Cemetery in Belgium.

John (Jock) Brew, 1907-1942. As he was a Jockey, he was always called "Jock" instead of John. Picture copyright; reproduced on this website with the kind permission of Vickie Riceman <s-v.riceman@xtra.co.nz> of New Zealand, November 2002.

The memorial is situated on the south side of the garden at Trinity Square, across the road from the Tower of London. A tube station, "Tower Hill", lies below the memorial and several bus routes stop adjacent to it.

The Tower Hill Memorial commemorates the 36,000 men of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both World Wars and who have no known grave.

John, who was also a Jockey, was always called "Jock" instead of John. He is related to Vickie Riceman of New Zealand.
