He left Thomas "the farm's husbandry gears" and 20 shillings.

This was the land Philip 1710-1783 bought from Margaret Brew als Skillicorn shortly after John's death, presumably to add to the share of the same land which he already owned [by inheritance?].

When Thomas 1746-1816 died he left his two daughters Catherine and Elizabeth ten pounds each "out of the money due to him from Jane widow of his son Thomas". Son Thomas "Junr of the Ballameanagh in Jurby" had died in 1815. He left his daughter Ann 20 shillings. His wife Catherine was sole exec.

Further Notes on Particular Individuals and their Descendants

Patrick BREW was baptised in Andreas on 6 February 1786, and married Jane CASHIN / CASSON. He was buried in Jurby in 1864, “Joiner and farmer” of West Craig Intack Lezayre.

Their eldest daughter, Jane, 1808-1861, married John MOUGHTIN in Lezayre in 1850, and was buried in Jurby. Their only daughter, Caroline Mary MOUGHTIN, was baptised in Andreas on 15 September 1852.

Patrick's other children were: William, baptised in German 9 October 1814; Mary, baptised in Jurby 11 May 1817; Margaret, baptised in Jurby 11 June 1820; Thomas, born ca. 1821; Ann, baptised in Jurby 5 August 1823. In Patrick's 1864 will, Thomas, William and Margaret were all "beyond seas". Also named was grandson James Brew KEIR, and the balance of his estate was left to his executrix Jane BREW als SEDDON, the wife of Thomas BREW of Ramsey.

Caroline Mary MOUGHTIN, the only daughter of Patrick Brew's daughter Jane, appears in the 1871 census: Caroline MOUGHTIN, servant, aged 18, born Lezayre, in household of Anne KERR, widow, aged 41, Lodging House Keeper, and son John Edward KERR.

Caroline Mary MOUGHTIN married George Henry WOOLVETT in Maughold on 16 September 1871. Daughter Caroline Sarah was baptised in Ramsey on 6 September 1872.

Burials in Ramsey: Priscilla Jane WOOLVETT, Ivy Lane, buried 2 August 1878, aged 4 months; Lena WOOLVETT, buried 10 December 1880, aged 1 year 3 months

1881 Census: 2 Ivy Lane, Ramsey, Caroline M. WOOLVETT, Head, Mariner’s Wife, aged 28, born Lezayre, with daughter Caroline S. WOOLVETT, aged 8; Joseph CLAGUE, relative, aged 21, boot and shoe maker; Alice J. CLAGUE, relative, aged 18.

"C. WOOLVETT" was the informant for Thomas Brew's death in Ramsey in 1882. Her address was then 15 Waterloo Road. She is recorded as "sister-in-law", but she was actually Thomas Brew's first cousin.

John BREW was baptised in Andreas on 6 July 1788, married Alice E[A]NNETT, and was buried in Ramsey in 1849, aged 62. He received 10 shillings in his father's 1833 will. Their children were:

  1. Christiana, baptised in Lezayre 11 December 1808

  2. John, baptised 8 September 1816, died 1879, farmer and butcher of Ramsey who married Catherine KENNISH. They had 10 children, all baptised in Ramsey

  3. William, baptised in Ramsey 23 August 1818

1851 Census: Ballure Road, Ramsey, Alice BREW, Head, widow, aged 66, born Douglas, son John, married, aged 34, butcher, born Ramsey and his wife Catherine [KENNISH], aged 28, Alice’s daughter Catherine, unmarried, aged 30, born Maughold, and granddaughter Catherine, aged 1, born Maughold.

1861 Census: Ballure Road, Ramsey, Beach Cottage, Alice BREW, aged 70, with Catherine, daughter, unmarried, aged 30 [sic]. Alice was buried in Ramsey in 1864, aged 79. Catherine married Thomas CALLOW in 1867.

John Brew of Ramsey (1788-1849) left a will - a combined will made with his wife Alice. The assets weren't distributed until after Alice's death in 1864. The "updated" information on the children shows eldest daughter Christian HOLDEN was in Buffalo, New York; Mary COWLE was married to Robert COWLE - her second marriage. Her first marriage was to ANDERSON; Margaret T?urton, previous marriage to T?raves [difficult to read]; Elizabeth PROUDFOOT; Ann SAYLE married to William SAYLE of Maughold; Catherine Brew was left the house they had recently [in 1849] bought in Kirk Maughold Street in Ramsey, commonly known as "John Sayle's house".

Debra Tosh adds, My great grandfather, William Sayle (1847-1922), came to America when he was 17. He is the son of William Sayle (1814-1901) and  Anne Brew (1826-1897). My gggrandmother Anne was from Ramsey and  my ggrandfather William was from Maughold. They married 10 February 1844 and had 9 children. Alice Margaret (1844) married a John Allen, Thomas Sayle died young, William Sayle came to America, Emma (1852), Sophia Elizabeth (1854), Anne (1856 - possibly came to America and married Frank Henry Norton, my grandfather was named after him), Eve Jane (1858 married Robert Christian), Isabella (1863), David (1864), Assinath (1868-1870), John (twin of Assinath). I don't know if David had children, but John lost all of his that we know of in infancy. Also, I'm not sure if all the girls married or what happened to them. Another strange find was my gggrandmother Anne was not buried in the Sayle plot in the Maughold cemetery, but was buried with her parents a few rows away. When my ggrandfather came to America, he travelled from Buffalo, NY to Cleveland, OH. There he met Ella Kaneen (her parents were from the IOM), and they immigrated to Kansas in 1876. They had 10 children. My grandfather (their 8th child) had three boys, and my father is the remaining one alive. I have 2 male cousins and three brothers so the Sayles name is still alive and well.

1861 Census: Ballure Road, Ramsey, John BREW, Head, married, aged 44, butcher, wife Catherine, aged 34, John, aged 13, Catherine, aged 10, William, aged 9, Alice, aged 6, Robert, aged 4, Edward, aged 1, Anne, aged 1 month.

Note: Alice Jane Brew, baptised 27 April 1845 in Ramsey has "mother Elizth. Brew". In the 1851 census she is listed as daughter of Isabella Brew. In the 1861 census she is listed as granddaughter of Isabella. If she was the daughter of Elizabeth Brew [b. 1826], born when Elizabeth was 19, where is Elizabeth in 1851? And where was Edward in 1841 [son of Isabella, aged 13 in 1851]?

1871 Census: 24 King Street, Ramsey, Isabella BREW, widow, aged 78, Charwoman, born Rushen. Not found in 1881 census.
